and water conservation design. Traditional field sampling provides high accuracy but is labor-intensive and limited by
terrain and safety constraints. UAV-based image analysis has emerged as an alternative approach, although fine-particle
detection remains challenging. This study evaluates UAV-derived surface grain-size analysis in the Puya River near
Xinmei Bridge, Taiwan, using 1,303 ground-truth measurements collected from upstream and downstream sampling plots. High-resolution UAV orthophotos were processed with BASEGRAIN software and compared with field data.Uncorrected UAV results show systematic underestimation of fine particles, leading to D₅₀ errors up to 50 %. Excluding particles smaller than 3 cm reduced D₅₀ and D₈₄ errors to approximately 10-20 %, significantly improving engineering
applicability.
